Grade 3 Program Overview

Third Grade Students need to have a strong basis of Mandarin literacy to be considered for admission.

Hours: 8:15 am - 3:30 pm. Extended Day available until 6:00 pm.

Teacher - Student Ratio 1:6

Mandarin Language Percentage: 70%

Subjects Taught: Mandarin Literacy, English Literacy (with English teacher), Illustrative Math and Shuxue (China’s national curriculum), Science, Art, Student Clubs, STEAM + Coding/Robotics, Music (English), P.E (English)

Educational Philosophy: Third grade students are literate in two languages and they can use their language skills to communicate their ideas effectively in both. Projects now include early multiplication, telling time and examining profit/loss in their own small business.

Second and third graders are scheduled to take multiple field trips, on the Eastside and in Seattle, to use their Mandarin skills for research projects. They also have an overnight camp in spring.

Projects now encompass the direct application of math and science skills and students present at the project showcase, at the end of each trimester.

Students in 3rd Grade are capable of strong collaboration and using all their other 21st century learning attributes: creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking.

Developing a stronger sense of responsibility. Third graders are managing their time in class and finishing their work more independently. They are learning how to type in Mandarin and use AI tools to generate content. They also become film makers using editing software as part of their project work.

3rd Grade Assessment results: Pending Spring 2024

Formal assessments take place in the fall and the spring at IFS, with Star, STAMP and Level Learning for Reading providing teachers and parents with valuable feedback. Third grade students also have their Mandarin writing formally assessed.
